‘Head to Head’ is a compelling video that you will want to watch several times. That is why we present this work, which was already on display at CAN REON Festival 2023, once again.
In ‘Head to Head’ Belgian actor, director and artist Herwig Ilegems explores the intricate relationship between humans and animals.
The work centers on intimate, face-to-face encounters between Herwig Ilegems and various animals, a rooster, a peacock, a goat, an ox, a donkey, an alpaca, an eagle owl and a water buffalo, culminating in moments where they come literally ‘Head to Head’. These interactions are marked by stillness and direct eye contact, emphasizing a deep sense of connection and mutual recognition.
Rather than approaching the animals from a perspective of human dominance or control, Herwig Ilegems presents himself as an equal. The animals, each with their unique presence and demeanor, are participants in a silent dialogue.
‘Head to Head’ is inviting us to reconsider the way we perceive and relate to non-human beings.
