The sculptures of Dutch artist Margriet van Breevoort traverse a delicate line between the extraordinary and the unimaginable. Van Breevoort is crafting surreal worlds, where the boundaries between animals, human-made objects, and humans themselves dissolve. She merges the familiar with the uncanny, creating hybrid forms. Human skin becomes an object, animals become human.
The creation of her artworks is driven by questions about authencity. Can we still perceive something as ‘natural’ when everything deemed as nature has been influenced and shaped by the hand of mankind?
The work, entitled The Waiting is a life-size mysterious, humanoid figure with oversized, rounded limbs and an expressive, contemplative posture, the artwork captures the universal human experience of waiting.Though it appears distinctly organic, its exaggerated proportions and almost manufactured smoothness suggest a being that transcends categorization. It could be animal, human, or something entirely new—an amalgamation of flesh and concept.
The Waiting will remain at CAN REON as a permanent feature, becoming a lasting symbol of connection, emotion, and time for visitors to ponder for years to come.
