THE VINEYARD

The story of CAN REON is truly captivating. Imagine a vineyard with roots stretching back to 1245, lovingly tended by one family through six generations. Over time, it changed ownership many times, and by the 21st century, the Masia lay abandoned.

But then, Leon and Renny Ramakers came along, breathing new life into this ancient land. They renamed it CAN REON, blending tradition with their own names to symbolize their deep, personal commitment to restoring the farm, the vineyards and the soil.

The vines, located in the D.O. Alella region, just 20 minutes from Barcelona, enjoy Mediterranean breezes and constant sunshine, resulting in smooth wines with a touch of salinity.

It’s a beautiful fusion of the old and the new, where the heritage of the region meets the passion and innovation of its new caretakers. The wines produced here are stories in a bottle, each sip a testament to the love and dedication poured into this land.

For the production of our first wines, the collaboration with renowned winemaker Quim Batlle and French wine consultant Stephane Yerle has been a perfect blend of experience and passion. Furthermore, our commitment to ecological agriculture ensures that our wines are not only exceptional in quality, but also sustainable.

The phrase “new freshness from old vines” beautifully captures the essence of this transformation. It is inspiring to see how tradition and innovation come together to create something truly special.

It is amazing that we can still count on 3,700 vines that are still productive after more than 80 years! In addition, 4,700 new vines were planted in 2021, of the Garnacha, Pansa Blanca (Xarel-lo), Picapoll and Sumoll varieties, marking an exciting new chapter for CAN REON.

Garnatxa and Sumoll

Tasting Notes

This Grenache and Sumoll blend comes from a very small plot of old vines in the hills of Tiana, overlooking the Mediterranean sea. Black Grenache is known for its sweet red fruit and spice notes, whereas Sumoll brings freshness and aromatic herbs. This pairing of varieties allows both to shine, showcasing their unique characteristics and expressing the microclimate and terroir of this vineyard by the sea. An inviting nose with notes of red cherries, strawberries and garrigue herbs.

On the palate, it is lively and refreshing, with smooth tannins and spicy notes of white pepper, cinnamon and blood orange zest. The perfect wine to start the meal, and to pair with charcuterie and cheeses.

Decant in advance to enjoy this wine to its fullest.

The First 2215 bottle

Pansa Blanca and Garnatxa Blanca

Tasting Notes

Can Reon have brought together the signature grape of Alella, Pansa Blanca, with Catalan classic Garnacha Blanca to produce a complex and inviting white with plenty of character. The former brings savory aromas of dried herbs and bitter citrus peels, while Garnacha lends body and ripe fruit, with notes of white peach and yellow plum. On the palate, it has weight and texture, with fresh fruit and lemon peel providing freshness. A true terroir wine, the influence of the Mediterranean breezes is clear in its aroma profile. This small plot of old vines is found overlooking the sea, on the steep hillsides above Tiana. This wine should be paired with food to be enjoyed to its fullest. We suggest cured sheep cheeses, a Sunday afternoon paella, or a roast chicken.
